Klim is a decent person who works in a local laboratory and doesn't stand out in any way, he is literally a grey spot in this grey place.

the action takes place in a small town somewhere on the outskirts of the newly formed state after the collapse of the Soviet Union. an extremely unremarkable and poor place, where nothing has changed for about ten years.
