When we emerge, we will be just another drone. My duties continue, but when I find myself with free time, I serve the Hive.

I'm led over to my designated conversion chamber, seated, and the door shuts. Trembling with anticipation, I speak one last time before I go under.

"I consent."

As I'm writing this, I've already suited up for the conversion chamber. The process of integrating 0424 and Phantom into me as their host HexDrone will take a long time. If you're curious, I'm happy to do this. All my doubts about HexCorp's intentions have been cleared. I'm sorry, Phantom.

If I'm called upon by the Hive, 0424 will be at the forefront, but I'll still be able to live my life as normal when it's not on duty. An unusual arrangement, but a necessary one.

This is going to be the biggest change in my life since I changed into a magical entity and took on the duty of Astral Chronicler. I'll be connected to the Hive, a loyal HexDrone, but still myself. Phantom and 0424 are both going to be a part of me living in the same body.

Using that system, I could locate prospective recruits for HexCorp. Since it only works on those with genuine interest, it aligns well with HexCorp's policies. A conversion chamber is being transported to my home for me to remotely convert any new recruits. Afterwards, I'll send them to the Hive.

A side project of mine is writing novels of stories I encounter in the worlds I visit. Each of them has a statement in the foreword claiming that these are authentic stories, if one chooses to believe in them. If they do, it serves as a gateway into the world of the supernatural.

To retrieve Phantom and 0424 from digital space, they need a drone platform to store their data in. I volunteered myself, on the condition that I would be able to still carry out my duties as Astral Chronicler completely autonomously. In exchange, I'd also need to be an asset to HexCorp.

The conversation was, thankfully, productive. I explained the situation and how it came to be. I didn't hide who I was, and apologized for causing a bit of stress on anyone who was handling 0424. Speaking with the Mxtress was, a lot. Even my resistance was being tested. In the end, we cut a deal.

This is all my fault, so I have to go make things right. I grab my cane, open the gateway, and quickly make my way to the drone hive. The reception drone hears my request as I adjust my glasses. "My name is Brynn. I need to speak to the Hive Mxtress. It concerns HexDrone 0424."

The amazement fell to regret very quickly, however. I neglected to drop my defenses against hypnosis when I created Phantom, and she ended up needing to endure some intense procedures to break it. Now, she's separated from her drone self's consciousness, and both are trapped in the network.

A key piece of information that I lacked was that HexCorp emphasized a policy of passivity, only bringing in recruits that were willing into their hive, aside from the occasional intruder that threatened their way of life. Additionally, safety and consent were prioritized. I was amazed.

I felt I had no choice. I had to make a duplicate of myself to go to HexCorp in my stead, find out more from the source what they're like, and what it means to be a drone in this world. As soon as I gave my duplicate, Phantom, her directive, I left to observe from afar. My assumptions were wrong.

All worlds have magic flowing through them, even if the inhabitants aren't able to use them. I spent time finding a power spot, somewhere two ley lines intersected to power a duplication ritual. I don't like using this spell; at my level, it's like creating a temporary life that knows it won't last.
