TL;DR: asymmetric learning rates can be induced by shifts in tonic dopamine giving rise to pessimistic/optimistic biases in agents or animals undergoing reinforcement learning .

Really enjoyed reading this, Tom! I'm hoping that continued increases in recording yields (working on this now) make it easier to scan for single trial activations at unknown times in future experiments—totally agree it'd be exciting to look for this directly
