As a child I went to a mainstream school that had a significant number of children with disabilities. It wasn't until I was adult that I found out that it was a pilot by the local authority to see what level of staffing/funding was required to get disabled children into mainstream school (this was in the 80s and 90s and I think the school was chosen as it was accessible without adaptation). To me it's strange to look at the school photos of my friends and family (including my own children) and not see wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, ear defenders and children with visual impairment. Children going off to have physio or learn Braille was a normal part of school life. The disabled children in my school were just my friends.

This comment on my column really sums up the enormous change we’ve seen over the last few decades in disabled pupils becoming part of society. Look at the class photos of your parents or grandparents and see whether there’s a visibly disabled child there.
