I’m sure there is a spectrum but that’s my point. I balked at food all the time, but was expected to try it and learned to enjoy adventure.

I wasn’t born 100 years ago.

Yeah we weren’t forced to eat. Just given the food and that was dinner and there is no alternative. If we whined, my dad would talk up the value of facing fears.

He was a shit dad in many ways, but in this, he was good.

I was a sickly child who would have died but for modern medicine, though.

Yeah it wasn’t forcing, really. It was just expected that we try. Same thing with stuff like swimming, diving, roller coasters. The expectation that we face fears was always there.

In my 1st grade assignments my mom kept, I cited (no doubt with spelling help) enchiladas as my favorite food.

If we balked at strange food, my dad would ask us if we wanted to grow up to be picky eaters. I’m sure that would be seen as shaming, but I felt empowered to choose who I was going to be.

It’s probably because we were working class in a border town, but I was eating adult food as a small kid, including spicy food.

Pickiness is about class, region, and I suspect race more than intrinsic qualities to kids.
