Planet of the Apes set, California, 1967 by Dennis Stock. When eating in the canteen the extras subconsciously segregated themselves, with the orangutans, chimpanzees and gorillas all sitting in groups and not mixing. Like a mirror of society.

Latesploitation: An examination of recent works by Gilbert Hernandez - The Comics Journal How do we read Gilbert Hernandez? The question gets harder, not easier, the more Hernandez adds to his body of work, but Greg Hunter takes a stab at answering it anyway.

For all the Beto heads: a really great deep dive into his work from The Comics Journal: https://ow.ly/7IYB50XqHsq!

The font would appear to be English 111 Adagio CE, available for the highly presidential sum of just $39.75 USD

Note "The" is not kerned correctly

(see perspective-corrected still for reference)

Willie and Joe are walking through the ruins of a battle and one comments "I think the new replacements are getting smaller all the time." They are looking at Snoopy, who is dressed as a soldier. He is thinking "Willie and Joe...my heroes! Happy Veterans Day, men!"

Peanuts from November 11, 1998. Charles M. Schulz pays tribute to veterans (and Bill Mauldin) by featuring Mauldin's characters, Willie & Joe.

This something I'm very proud to have done, in partnership with NatLib and @jingajik.bsky.social's team.

In 2019, we put the first 8 years of Rip It Up online, free, searchabe and downloadable. In 2024 we added 1986-98 paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/periodicals/...

Alan Moore's situation is like if Phil Ochs was still alive and his catalog was owned by Donny and Marie and they performed it a lot.

It's been interesting to watch. Teenagers and college age kids are buying several at a time, and can get 5 or 6 CDs for the price of a new album. But we're also seeing older customers repurchasing classic rock type stuff that they may have had on vinyl or CD in the 80s/90s. And a lot of jazz/improv people are fine with CDs, especially if they never stopped buying them. CDs are almost like what vinyl was in the early 90s when everyone was dumping them.

Interesting convo with a friend who owns a hip NYC record shop about a sudden renewed interest in CDs, which were a negligible part of his business till recently.

Developing guidelines for supervising Neurodivergent HDR students

I'd appreciate help circulating this survey, part of our overall work on neurodivergence.

This one is on behalf of the graduate deans, to develop better supervision guidelines.

You can help by boosting and circulating the link in your various networks 🙏 redcap.unisq.edu.au/surveys/?s=D...

A bleak black and white photograph of a row of houses with dustbins outside. There are steps up to darkened doorways and no visible windows. Each house has four chimneys. To the right are industrial chimneys and in the foreground are barely visible cobbles and what looks like large lumps of coal debris.

This is an image which always triggers a strong response.

People often claim it is East Durham rather than Halifax. This comes from a mistake in the labelling of this photo in the V&A collection which has now been corrected but the myth persists.

People often claim the label is misleading but this is the title given to the photo by Brandt himself. It is likely that there were windows on the other side but four chimneys normally means four rooms. You must judge for yourself whether any of the rooms were windowless.

People often claim there were no mines in Halifax. This is incorrect, although there weren’t many mines the area is on the edge of a coalfield.

Ultimately we must remember than none of Bill Brandt’s photos can be taken at face value and neither can the titles he gave them. That’s all part of the mystery of his work.

‘A row of coal miners' houses with no windows to the street’, Halifax, 1937 by Bill Brandt. Nostalgia is a seductive liar.

The truly maddening thing is that, unlike when I was a young man in science and the materials and engineering just weren’t there yet, the future is *right there.* The problem is *solved*. What’s holding us back is not just greed, but this bizarre nostalgia, an obsession with petro- masculinity.
