Weekend Update#120: The US Changes Sides? Is this the week the post-1945 world ended?

Partially a tough read, but an important piece by @phillipspobrien.bsky.social.

I highly recommend checking it out.

My bet: There wont be any peace agreement in Ukraine during 2025. Ukraine will not accept one without security guarantees and Russia will not accept one with security guarantees. Peace will come only after Russia lose either on the battlefield or when their home front cracks wide open.

Induction stoves are slowly but surely becoming standard here in Switzerland. Only beef I have with them is that they usually come with touchscreen interfaces, which are a pain to use and inferior to classic knobs

Massive Ai blocklist for Ublock Origin. So your image result on several browsers can be 90%, or so, Ai-free. (Block also tons of Ai generated crap blogs and "websites").

The Trump “blank canvas that everyone projects their views on” theory continues to be the most correct theory in the history of theory like how is this a real person. What is the information space they’re in that they reach this conclusion?

15 Times to use AI, and 5 Not to Notes on the Practical Wisdom of AI Use

I wrote a list of 15 types of work where AI is particularly helpful, and also 5 areas where it can be a trap.

AI is still best, at least for now, as a co-intelligence working with humans. Knowing when to use it, and when to avoid it, is a useful skill. www.oneusefulthing.org/p/15-times-t...

A simple experiment you can do is buy a server, set up a website with nothing on it, then look at the access logs. All day, every day, there are random systems just blasting vulnerabilities at every device on the internet. Analysts call it "background noise", executives call it "cyber attacks".

$1 phone scanner finds seven Pegasus spyware infections iVerify’s detection tool was launched in May and is turning up victims.

Seven out of 2,500 scans may sound like a small group, especially in the somewhat self-selecting customer base of iVerify users, yet the fact that the tool has already found a handful of infections at all speaks to how widely the use of spyware has proliferated around the world.

Two years into the AI boom, it's imperative we understand the true power of "AGI"—as a narrative tool useful for winning investment, talent and headlines.

My report for AI Now details how OpenAI used the story of a rising AI that will replace humans to replace the need for an actual business model.

So since we’re talking prepper stuff, here’s my personal experience with ways that apocalypse prep supplies go wrong: some people think that they only need calories and it doesn’t much matter where it comes from or what it tastes like because if you are hungry, you’ll eat it.

The Secret Pentagon War Game That Offers a Stark Warning for Our Times The devastating outcome of the 1983 game reveals that nuclear escalation inevitably spirals out of control.

With big-power competition on the rise and renewed interest in new tactical nuclear weapons and limited scenarios, this article about war game lessons should grab your attention:

I don't really see a clear path where we keep an open internet that is not mostly full of AIs talking to each other. We can't reliably detect AI content, it is cheap and easy to generate, and there are lots of incentives to do so, even besides scams.

You can see the problem on all the social sites.

I think you’re hedging too much on the accuracy of these renders. Their purpose is PR and there is little indication of strong links to engineering models of the rocket
