The depressing part about this fact is seeing the halo series, carried forward by completely different people, ape the concept entirely as directed by their execs for halo infinite, which ended up being hilariously, bleakly finite by comparison

Marathon: Infinity is named thus because the possibilities for creative fans, potential aspiring gamedevs included, are effectively endless—bungie at the time wanted their fans to make their own stories and experiences and made them all potential canon to the game’s plot. It’s genuinely touching.

One of the biggest joys of being into marathon is seeing the concept of “infinity” indirectly realized by the third installment, in that bungie released m3’s full level/scenario editor so that people could make their own chapters and missions within marathon’s engine.
