And I will add the craft appeal comes in many forms. I love a stitch bound book with ribbon markers, detailed art, and a beautifully embossed cover, but I also love a stapled cardboard booklet with uneven folds, cheap art, and twenty four fonts. Both wildly different, both come from the same heart.

Sure, functionality is fine, four legs and a flat surface make a table, but for some it’s about the craftsmanship. The joinery, the finish, the feel. Some look at RPG books the same. The content matters, but the joy comes from the sum of the craft with the words, art, layout, and physicality.

It was just so odd. The poor GM felt guilty for ending it but apparently this was the SECOND time this player did this. It is almost like getting a Fighting Fantasy game book, making a character, reading the opening premise, and then binning it because it’s not what your warrior Sir Loin would do. 😅

There’s definitely room for this kind of shenanigans when you have a full group, but in a 1 on 1 game, where one person is basically your personal living choose your own adventure book, one might want to temper some of those player expectations. Sometimes you just buy the ticket and enjoy the ride.

I read a post yesterday about a one-on-one Call of Cthulhu game where a player went through full character creation, the GM set up the opening scene and presented the hook, and the player refused it because “that’s not what my PC would do,” and essentially ended the game not willing to compromise.
