Perched upright on a weathered stump, a small brown Wren tilts its head back mid-call against a soft golden backdrop, alert and vocal.
Many MPs claim to care about nature.
Tomorrow afternoon will be the test.
On Tuesday 3rd March there will be a debate in Parliament on red lines for nature.
We’ll be watching to see who shows up. Empty seats will say a lot.
Tell us who you expect to see there tomorrow. 👇

Stand up for our wild places!
The Prime Minister is backing proposals to weaken protections for our most important wild places by expanding the Fingleton Review’s recommendations.

If you care about nature, fairness, food security, flood resilience, or the future economy - this matters to you.
IPBES 12 wasn’t just a meeting.
It was a reset. Let’s make it count!

And we will keep advocating to our governments to take nature seriously, bringing it into policy decisions to enable and incentivise action.
Now’s the time to act.

Now comes the hard part: turning the assessment into action.
The RSPB will keep working with partners to give them the confidence to act. We help turn ambition into real-world impact across our land, sea and skies, building resilient landscapes and creating a future where nature and people thrive.

Across the whole week in Manchester, one theme kept resurfacing:
Thriving nature = thriving communities = a stronger, safer economy.
If we invest in ecosystems, we invest in our own security and wellbeing.
That’s not ideology, that’s a fact backed by evidence.

Now, this couldn’t come at a more important moment.
New national standards for business nature reporting are being built and IPBES-12 underlined that nature must sit alongside climate in these frameworks.
You can’t hit net zero if your peatlands, wetlands and other ecosystems are degraded.

The RSPB team was proud to be a part of this process, bringing science from UK landscapes and practical lessons from decades of conservation work and business engagement.
And we strengthened alliances across research, finance, civil society and industry.

Businesses at IPBES-12 said they want fairness and certainty.
That means sharing resources, and governments creating conditions that enable and incentivise action.

But what does the new global assessment actually do?
It shows:
• how dependent businesses are on nature
• how decisions in the boardroom impact ecosystems
• How we can move from ambition to practical action

Our own Executive Director of Global Conservation, Katie-Jo Luxton, summed it up perfectly when speaking:
“Work with nature, not against it. That’s how governments and businesses build resilience and long-term prosperity.”
And the evidence backs it.

The message that echoed through the week?
Nature isn’t optional.
It’s the foundation of everything: flood protection, food security, stable supply chains.
But too often we treat it like a ‘nice-to-have’ - something we can ignore until something goes wrong.
That mindset is shifting.

What a win for nature!
Scotland is the first UK country to have Swift bricks in law – a lifeline for this threatened bird. And, for the first time ever, the Scottish Government must set legally binding nature recovery targets.
Thanks for helping make history with a strong Natural Environment Bill.

Climate impacts now affect every coastal and marine habitat.
Overgrazing, polluted water and rising wildlife disease are adding relentless pressure.
If nature underpins stability, food security and wellbeing, this level of decline is indefensible.

The assessment shows that the UK Government is failing to slow biodiversity loss and consistently falling short of taking the actions needed to drive nature’s recovery, while instead seeking to weaken the protections that currently exist.
This isn’t good enough.

A National Security Assessment highlighted nature as a national security risk earlier this week.
Yet yesterday’s Habitats Regulations report shows many of England’s most important habitats are rapidly declining.
Just 3% are in good condition.
And half are in an unfavourable and worsening state 🧵

Yes, offshore wind is essential for tackling climate change.
But clean energy shouldn’t come with a body count.
We should be working towards lower-impact sites that can deliver the same energy without wiping out wildlife.
We don’t have to choose between climate action and living seabirds.

Berwick Bank could be one of the deadliest wind farms in the world for seabirds.
In its first year, scientists predict it could kill:
• 2,808 Guillemots
• 815 Kittiwakes
• 261 Gannets
• 154 Razorbills
• 66 Puffins
That’s 4,000+ birds before year two, and tens of thousands over its lifetime.
