Alberta’s Premier is doing an amazing job these days demonstrating to everyone why politicians should never be in charge of their own election rules.

"Electoral reform would be tantamount to enacting political antitrust legislation."

Exactly. Politicians shouldn't be allowed to set the rules by which politicians are elected. This is the job of an independent, non-partisan body in the form of a Citizens' Assembly.

If there were awards for systemic flaws in our political system I think Premiers & PMs being able to unilaterally decide what electoral reform will look like or in this case whether it happens at all would win top prizes in the #conflictofinterest and #democraticdeficit categories.

🧡4/4 This has been a good lesson on the dangers of photoshop, misinformation, and malicious politics.
What has surprised us most is just how easily a random bozo on Youtube fooled dozens of MPs.
The LBC will continue to take great pride in our spotless record and strict observance of election law❀️

🧡3/4The good news is we have the original unedited photo! The forms are still blurry, but you can definitely make out where the name is.
And...by a stroke of luck we also held on to the original forms featured in the photoπŸ˜€ (though we won't be sharing those on a bluesky post)

Northern Perspective worked hard to get their accusation known, repeating it many times on their Youtube Channel during the Battle River Crowfoot Byelection. Their edited photo even made it to parliament: Below is MP Michael Cooper holding up the image they manipulated.

🧡1/4 Did Northern Perspective edit a photo to make it appear blank? (Yes)

For 3 months the Youtube channel Northern Perspective has been accusing us of collecting nomination signatures without a candidates name on the form. Their proof... a photo they "zoomed-in and enhanced" ...

Does anyone know which ridings Carney and Poilievre will run in if the budget doesn't pass? Asking for a friend.

❀️ everyone agrees there’s a conflict of interest when MPs decide election rules. Here’s how things now stand:
πŸ‘ŽOur opponents say β€œit’s no big deal…long ballots though, they’ve gotta be stopped.β€œ
πŸ‘We say ”long ballots are no big deal… but that inappropriate conflict of interest needs to be stoppedβ€œ

Alberta government to introduce bill limiting who can run in provincial elections Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s government is planning to introduce legislation this fall to limit who can run in provincial elections.

There's never been a longest ballot provincially in AB...So what's going on? Best guess is the ruling party is using long ballots as an excuse to enact politically self-serving election rules that have little to do with us (similar to what's happening at PROC)

The "1 official agent per candidate" proposal (not one OA per candidate per riding, which would specifically target us) is particularly devious:

The voting ballot for the next Dutch election is wider than my table.

Long ballots are incredibly common in many jurisdictions, so when MPs claimed last week at PROC that long ballots confuse voters, we have to laugh. What makes them so sure πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ voters are more easily confused than voters elsewhere?

Here’s a ballot from the Netherlands

Yet more manufactured outrage. This talking point relies on the fact that most Canadians won't really know, or understand what an OA actually does.

As someone who was, years ago, a campaign manager for an independent candidate, there is no reason an OA cannot rep multiple candidates.

2/3 As you can see from the results below, sharing OA's is very common. It is disproportionally relied on by the NDP, Green and PPC.
The PROC experts likely had zero clue about this reality, so it's unfortunate their eager endorsements have given a non-partisan cover to a very partisan rule change

1/3 Last week at PROC, profs lined up to support the "1 candidate/OA" proposal. What caught our attention was that they are not proposing 1 candidate/per OA/per riding. To get a better grasp on why they are so interested in this change we took a look at the 2025 election returns...
