I'm a high school history teacher in Ketchikan, Alaska, currently writing a book on the 19th-century history of the Lingít (Tlingit) nation. I'd like to follow historians, especially ones focused on subaltern, colonial, and Indigenous histories.

Honestly, this is exactly something Don Young (R-AK) would have done.

And he was never voted out of office.

Hi Sam—don't know if you saw my comment on the Sentinel's FB page, but there were seven clans represented at the ceremony and you left out the Kayaashkiditaan. Their leader who spoke at the ceremony is Richard Oliver, and you can see him accept the apology at 5:11:55 www.youtube.com/live/GEWk1oe...

It's still surreal to me that I come to Bluesky and it just looks like Twitter from 2015.

Don't get me wrong—it's great. But it is surreal.

I understand the sentiment re: Sullivan and Begich, but it is a pretty sad state of affairs that societal trust in so many professionals is so low, and in many cases pretty unjustified.

Who are the Alawites?
YouTube video by Let's Talk Religion Who are the Alawites?

I watched this video again to remind myself about the Alawites, and I have to say—I will not be surprised at all if we start hearing about Alawites being persecuted in Syria. youtu.be/ZXA6DpInIRc?...

It's shocking to me that Assad is out, seemingly out of nowhere, after he was able to hold onto power for so long. Can anyone recommend a good article or video explaining what exactly happened in the last few weeks?

I'm not mad most of the Romance languages change patterns in the middle of numbers 11-19. I'm mad they somehow couldn't agree on the same place to change patterns, so now I will forever question myself when trying to say "16" in any of them.

(Mulțumesc Romanian for being consistent on this one.)

Here's my bottom line: I have to finish this manuscript, so I'm giving myself a countdown. I can take no more than 250 more hours to finish, and I have to use them within 12 months' time or less.

Dec. 1st, 2025 is my final deadline. Let's do this!

I took a year sabbatical and made a ton of progress on my manuscript, then returned to teaching and fell into a big slump. I finally went back to look at my writing hours I had logged but never totalled up:

On sabbatical (June '22-Aug. '23)—824 hours
After sabbatical (Sept. '23-Present)—188 hours

I like building playlists for the languages I'm working on, and right now that's German. Does anyone have good artist recommendations? I like a decently wide variety of music—current favorites include Adel Tawil, Bushido, Chakuza, Juli, Mark Forster, Tim Bendzko, and Xavier Naidoo.

I spent my first three years in Hong Kong, then was raised in Ketchikan, Alaska, then went off to college in Washington, D.C., and I've been back in Ketchikan ever since. No regrets!

It’s truly stunning how often history books place higher value and attention on the imaginations of Europeans than on the actual realities of non-Europeans.

This looks super interesting and valuable! I live in the middle of a national forest created from stolen Indigenous land, but basically all the writing about the forest is on the history of conflict between conservation and economic interests, not the colonization that set up those tensions.

In 1965, leaders in Ketchikan, Alaska named our main middle school after a conman. It's well past time to change the name, and Kichx̱áan Héeni Middle School is the best name to reconnect us with our roots and honor our geography, history, and heritage.

Here's the text of my speech I gave at the Ḵaax̱gal.aat Yagiyee celebration that was held this afternoon at Ketchikan High School:

I can't say I'm too surprised, but Threads has essentially become the social media embodiment of toxic positivity. So that's why I'm here!

Here's a piece I wrote a few years ago on toxic positivity in education: medium.com/@peterwstant...
