We covered the importance of McDonald’s ‘Sweet Freedom’ video in our Running Scared Rewatchables — it’s the last gasp of the Yacht Rock era. I think all Yacht Rock songs should be from 1977-1985 with only a couple exceptions and this one of them (since it ended Yacht Rock).

This was the peak of Yacht Rock before we even knew what Yacht Rock was — the Doobies in Santa Barbara in 1982 during their farewell tour. There’s a reason our director Garret Price started the doc with a song from this day.

This Doobie Brothers farewell concert album from 1982 is absolutely fantastic. McDonald is out of his mind great in this. I had this as a cassette in the 1980s and 1990s and it was an unbelievable road trip album.

My Spotify Yacht Rock playlist has just about all the songs in the doc plus a bunch more. I had to throw a couple Eagles and Hall and Oates songs in even though they don’t count as Yacht Rock bands. Sorry.
