My wildest, craziest fantasy is that they wonโt just be cowering in the darkness again within my lifetime.
I want them to face real consequences. I want the Nazis to hurt. I want every far-right extremist currently posting openly about their bigotry to never again know a momentโs peace.

Now me, I'm interested in historical spelling variation, and even with a 99% CAR the resulting transcriptions don't pass muster - if, that is, I want reliable numbers.
The technology is amazing, but it's not amazing for everything. It's not even _good_ for everything.

Oh, totally. But what this means is that it's really good at modernizing historical texts, which is what a lot of users want anyway. Such a technology is fantastic for some research questions, like: find me _all_ the names in these 1,500,000 pages of MSS dated 1500-1800.

Wondering if the reason Gemini is apparently so good is that Google has twenty years experience of Google Books to draw on. The OCR behind it has greatly improved over the years, though I can't think of anyone remarking on this, or the practices behind it.

A New Lens into the Archive
You are in an archive. You find a document in a language you don't understand. You take a photo, input it into Gemini 3 Pro. 60 seconds later you have a transcription, transliteration, and translation
The results that @marinelives.bsky.social is getting using Gemini 3 Pro, transcribing and translating Armenian ms materials are stunning. Historians, teachers and archivists really need to be discussing where we want to be with this stuff. open.substack.com/pub/generati...

For my Elvis book I met the Finnish academic who performed and recorded Elvis songs translated into both Latin and Sumerian.
"Of course, they did not have blue suede shoes in Sumeria," he told me, "so I had to translate the song as 'on my sandals of sky blue leather, please do not stand".
