Johtajien palkat erkaantuvat muista, vaikka Suomen talouskehitys surkeaa.

This letter, addressed to a spice merchant in Montpellier, is dated to the 1250s and written mostly in medieval Occitan. The most compelling part to me is that it's written on paper rather than parchment. Remarkably early example of paper in this region, especially among merchants! #medievalsky

"Having preserved the knowledge held by these communities, it was no longer necessary, or even convenient, to preserve the people themselves."
This is about indigenous NAm peoples and their linguistic record, but it applies to all imperialists and robber barons alike.

If you ever want to read a paper for free and can't find it otherwise, email the lead author and politely ask for a copy. You will not be bothering the person. You will in fact make their whole entire day. I have had scientists get so excited I asked they sent me everything they ever published.

On a more serious note, rapid armament depletion has been one of the identified risks from pretty much every major exercise of the last 15 years. Not to mention the evidence provided by the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Legit impressive how quickly this administration has fucked up the US military.

Yan Ge | It cannot read the human heart
A friend in China messaged me on WeChat. ‘What are your thoughts on the plagiarism scandal?’‘What scandal?’ I...
when you are an author (or a student) putting in texts even "just for editing" into gen-AI, you are at risk of plagiarism bec this is how the algorithm works. in old-fashioned academic integrity lingo, you participate a mass "collusion". we end up with 30 essays with the same structure & argument

[We see a close up of a young white male, tanned, white teeth, coiffed hair clearly an influencer on social media. It is an image such as you see when social media posts are shown on the news. In the corner of the screen is named a location: DUBAI. He is staring slightly off-camera for several silent panels of the comic strip. His eyes move slightly. He is having a thought.]
From off-screen a newsreader’s commentary comes:
NEWSREADER:
Extraordinary images here
of an expat in Dubai
[The influencer’s eybrows raise slightly]
…Having their first ever geopolitical thought.
[CUT TO a BBC news scene. The BBC newsreader CLIVE MYRIE is talking to an interviewee next to the screen showing the social media influencer’s face. The interviewee’s name is David Jones].
CLIVE MYRIE:
To explain the significance of this moment we’re joined by David Jones, our Expat Thoughts correspondent
DAVID JONES:
Clive, this is momentous
It was caught on film at the end of an Instagram post titled: ‘Dubai Is Brilliant’.
[Pointing at the screen, the influencer’s expression still the same]
You can clearly see in the eyebrows here, the dawning realisation that there *might* be something in the world beyond his dickhead self.
It marks a *huge* departure from all the Dubai Expat’s previous thoughts.
CLIVE MYRIE:
Which are…?
DAVID JONES:
You've Got To Get Yourself Out Here Mate, Everything Is So Clean, I Don't Have To Pay Taxes,
I Am Incurious As To Why I Do Not Have To Pay Taxes, and Spa.
CLIVE MYRIE:
And might we see an expansion of these new Thoughts in coming days?
DAVID JONES:
I think we can expect to see:
“I Deserve To Be Airlifted By A Country I Pay No Tax To”
CLIVE MYRIE:
Mmm.

🚨 It looks like the UK government is gearing up to upend copyright law in favour of AI companies, legalising the theft of their work.
This is despite creatives' huge protests, and despite previous proposals being roundly rejected by the public.
Please spread the word.

When we talk about slavery, we're talking about a system that goes beyond the mere physical ownership and control by white planters over black enslaved people: we're discussing a system of psychological terror which pervaded every element of enslaved people's lives, even beyond the living.

This is the story of slavery at its most traumatic, one predicated not just on physical violence against enslaved people by slave owners, but the all-encompassing terror of slavery as a psychological tool of control and oppression, and the desperate ways enslaved people tried to resist it. Snippet of a hand-written text with the word 'received' spelled <Receiv,d>
Does someone know anything about the practice of using a comma instead of an apostrophe? I've so far come across two writers doing this: one is late-18th century, and the other (pictured here) unknown but I reckon late-18th to mid-19th century. #spelling #punctuation #manuscripts

Design | Artek joutuu kasvattamaan omia koivuja – Syy: Suomalainen tehometsätalous
