Katharine is the industry’s best kept secret and one of the most influential leftists (anarchists?) in the game industry imo

Yeah, and for game research too, she wrote a very important phd thesis on game design tools (among other brilliant stuff she make).

a picture of Stéphanie, medium sized, white, female, wearing a shirt, glasses and short hair, explaining with conviction the definition of play of Bernard Suits. The projected slides states the definition: "playing a game is the voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles", then "To play a game is to attempt to achieve a specific state of affairs [prelusory goal], using only means permitted by rules [lusory means], where the rules prohibit use of more efficient in favour of less efficient means [constitutives rules] and where the rules are accepted just because they make possible such activity [lusorty attitude]," cited from Bernard Suits in his book "The Grasshopper: Games, Life and Utopia.

What is you prefered play/game definition?
Mine is from Bernard Suits' book (1978). It emphasizes that play is a subjective state of mind, you can't force someone to play. Plus, both concepts of unecessary obstacles and sub-optimal means are great ways to approach game design.
