Why Are American Passenger Trains Slow? - American Affairs Journal In the 1950s, the Milwaukee Road’s Olympian Hiawatha carried passengers from Minneapolis to Chicago in roughly seven hours. Today, Amtrak’s Empire Builder covers that same distance in just under eight...

This is really fascinating, a major reason that passenger trains in America suck is because it has exceptionally good freight trains

How America Chose Not to Hold the Powerful to Account Our national project of elite impunity

After the arrests of powerful men across the world, you might be asking why the US has so much trouble holding its leaders accountable for lawbreaking. Since Nixon, all three branches of government have worked hard to ensure they can break the law with impunity www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Barophobiar
The superhero could not find a cure for his lice.
Invisibility streamed dreams into his scalp.
Flying burned his hair into skin.
At night, the superhero slept inside the walls.
He was never alone, and that was the way he liked it.
When it rained, the dawn chorus woke the villains, and the superhero stood on the brink of a volcano to find out what was true.

It must be fucking amazing to go through life with absolutely no self awareness. Is there a combination of drugs and head trauma I can do to make this happen for me?

I think an upsettingly large fraction of the adult population that wants to live in cities thinks of cities as "grown-up life Disneyland," where all the public spaces and amenities exist specifically for them. When they see this their first thought is "No line!"

One of the few things that gives me any hope for the future is the incredible innovation happening in solar, batteries, and geothermal energy. The technology for clean, cheap energy is here, one hopes that someday a government interested in governing for the public benefit can deliver on it.
