It's an overcast 9am, and the solar panels are already generating 4x more electricity than we're using. Yesterday afternoon, it was more like 15x.

The only potential downside of going solar is the risk of becoming a bit geeky about it (like me), satisfyingly watching the free power just roll in.

Having examined both, it feels a bit like some people are already living in a viable future, which is quite inspiring! Can we learn to live better and more sustainably? I certainly believe so.

Apparently we can use up to 800w and anything else is given to the grid for free- if we can store it then thats another matter. Local conditions mean that it should be between 2 and 3 years to break even.

I spoke to neighbours about how much they produced and stored and this seems to be about right for us- together with the mounts, cables etc, Ive paid €2300 with a company called Tepto who delivered in around a week. They had great reviews and it all looks good.

Ive still not installed my PV panels and batteries, but a friend will come and help this weekend- I have a flat roof so will install the 2KW panels on that, but getting them up (each is 28kg) is not possible alone. The batteries are a total of 6.4kw storage

They packed 4 panels in a pyramid shape on a pallet with all the fittings and batteries in the centre- each panel weighs 28kg so how I’m going to get them on the roof is going to be a challenge!
