The District of Columbia is under attack today β€” not from violent gangs or thieves, but by the President of the United States.

The President's weaponization of the Home Rule Act is a direct attack on the 700,000 residents of DC and we will not stand for it.

Everything you need to know about D.C. home rule The city’s power over its own affairs is imperiled by the incoming Trump administration. Here’s what you should know about the parameters of local control in D.C.

"After the Civil War, white residents pushed back on an elected mayor and council altogether because Black residents had been given the right to vote in those electionsβ€”and were winning council seats."

I did my PhD at UMD and currently work in UMD's Special Collections. Some of my colleagues earned MLIS degrees from UMD and we work with MLIS students often. Happy to connect!

I had a delightful experience teaching this! Most of the class loved it. One of my favorite teaching experiences, and one I don’t take for granted since I shared the same fear!

we can have more. public goods, an economy rooted in growing people and creative making - healthcare for all, free school for all, the history of creative culture not enclosed by data companies but at the library for everybody, public spaces and public arts, dense plentiful housing. we can.

Hello everyone, the College Park National Archives site has now taken down the header announcing restrictions. Because of that and the post below, I've deleted my original post because I do not want to share misinformation. My deep hope is that this was a major messaging fail. Orig. lang. below πŸ‘‡

If you're a D.C. Library user, be aware: The D.C. Public Library system says it is likely going to have to reduce opening hours at neighborhood branches, from the current 61 hours a week to 40 hours. Branches would also go from being open seven days a week to five days.

The NEH has been a singular force for bringing people together. In this moment of hate, fear and isolation, the NEH helped us learn about our past and about each other.

Today we are losing almost all of the NEH public servants. We are all in their debt. A national shame. A profound cultural loss.

this is a massive loss. so many historians rely heavily on this database for research, teaching, everything. they say "do your own research" but they don't mean it.

As a scholar, as a teacher, and now as a museum educator, Chronicling America has been invaluable.

Beyond that, though, it's OURS. We paid for it. It's a public good.

I cannot begin to express how invaluable the National Digital Newspaper Program & ChronAm are to my work as a researcher, instructor, and librarian.

The NDNP team at NEH & LC is (was?) such a force for good--it is cruel that the public is robbed of the team's plans for the program's future.

Phenomenal news from @mellon.org for many of the #NEH state #humanities councils we've been highlighting these past few weeks. We stand in solidarity with your staff and will continue to share the amazing stories about your work across the United States.

If you'd like to see all the canceled NEH grants at variance with agency priorities that allegedly will fail to inspire your confidence in use of taxpayer funds, go explore impact.ach.org. Then contact your representatives about this outrageous cull.

There has been so much devastation, but for my communities this is especially devastating. I cannot overstate how much we owe to the Office of Digital Humanities & the incredible people who have worked there. The work won’t end, but it will be severely curtailed

Would love to know if anyone is organizing any legal challenges to #NEH terminations. All I've heard about is contacting members of Congress and writing op-eds which I think are of little help at this point. What are individuals to do?

Say Goodbye to Small-Town Libraries and Museums, Thanks to Trump’s Latest Cuts The NEH budget is tiny. The loss is huge.

My Slate piece on the widespread NEH grant cancellations is live. So much gratitude to everyone who took the time to talk with me these past few days while fighting fires on every side.

We need to keep the cuts to the NEH at the forefront of national, local media attention. I just had a convo today with someone from my local Mass state rep's office about how the cuts to the NEH & NSF etc. and the broader war on higher education will have destructive effects locally.
