The Initiation Well at the Quinta da Regaleira was designed by Italian architect Luigi Manini, under the direction of the property owner António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro who wanted to build out the estate to reflect his interests and ideologies. The well has nine platforms, which are thought to represent the nine circles of Hell, the nine divisions of Purgatory, and the nine skies that make up Paradise in Dante Alighieri's epic theological poem, "Divine Comedy," written in the 14th century. The full Dante quote I wanted to use, but ran out of characters: “We climbed, he first and I behind, until through a small round opening ahead of us, I saw the lovely things the heavens hold, and we came out to see once more the stars.”
