We at the Electrification Alliance wrote a thing about how to boost the use of clean European energy in our buildings, transport and industry.

Gas and electricity networks top UK profit margin rankings Soaring energy bills and power blackouts raise calls for greater scrutiny of regional monopolies

UK energy and energy distribution operate at a profit margin of 40%. That is insane. www.ft.com/content/aff4...

Stop Crown Estate charging extortionate fees for the seabed leases for offshore wind. The last round for fixed wind could push up prices by Β£20/MWh I'm told by commercial analysts

Keir Starmer prepares to miss key green target in effort to keep energy bills down Exclusive: Promise to remove almost all fossil fuels from UK’s electricity supply by 2030 may be quietly abandoned over cost

This would be a regressive step. Shows a poverty of thinking inside No10

Why? 🧡🧡

1. There are ways of bringing bills down and keeping costs lower whilst continuing to build out clean power.

2. The problems the renewables build out addresses haven't gone away

Spain’s rapid wind and solar growth has CUT the link between gas and electricity prices πŸŒͺοΈβ˜€οΈ

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έβ€™s decoupling of gas and electricity prices happened faster than in other European countries, making it one of the cheapest power markets in Europe.

NEW | Surging wind and solar power helped make electricity in Spain CHEAPER than in most European countries.

πŸ“ˆ As wind and solar grows…
πŸ“‰ …The influence of costly fossil fuels on the electricity price shrinks

Spain’s Renewable-Energy Boom Loosens Gas’s Grip on Power Prices Soaring renewables output in Spain is weakening gas’s grip on electricity prices, setting the country apart from much of Europe where fossil fuels still dictate the cost of power.

"Spain’s rapid renewables build-out means that in the first half of this year, its power prices were set by fossil generation just 19% of the time [..] As a result, wholesale electricity was almost a third cheaper than the European Union average"

Distorted taxation is undermining energy security - European Heat Pump Association Governments are undermining heat pumps’ critical role in boosting Europe’s energy security by taxing electricity far more heavily than gas, analysis from the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) show...

Our new analysis: Europe aims to get off gas - so why are governments taxing it way less than electricity?

Tax is a key tool governments can use to boost heat pumps and Europe's sovereignty & energy independence!

We discuss this + more at this week's #HPForum.

The nice thing about shifting levies from electricity to gas? Everyone uses electricity so everyone saves money. The more you electrify, the more you save and the less goes to Putin and Trump.

Energy users β€˜could save Β£5bn a year’ if gas plants are removed from market Former energy tsar suggests the β€˜radical step’ as one of the few options the government has for cutting bills

Moving gas plants - which set the price of electricity- out of the market and into a nationally controlled reserve, would take Β£5bn off the UK’s energy bills

Want mass heat pump adoption? Fix the running costs.

The electricity-to-gas price ratio is key. When policy makes electricity artificially expensive, the cleaner choice isn't the cheaper one. It's time to rebalance energy taxes, as this @thecccuk.bsky.social chart highlights.

More people buying electric cars and heat pumps than ever before But the Climate Change Committee warns there's still a long way to go for the UK to reach net zero by 2050.

πŸ’š Good news: People are not buying into the anti-net zero narratives from the right - but the CCC still highlights there is more to do:
"The government has made progress on a number of fronts ... [but] they need to do more on making electricity cheap."

The Spanish government is reporting that the cause of the massive blackout wasn't a lack of thermal power plants - rather that they failed to provide power at the time, acting 'inappropriately'.

Funny, after fossil lobbyists were so quick to blame renewables..

There is no country/zone with a) high prices and low carbon emissions or b) with low prices and high emissions.

The higher the carbon emissions from electricity generation in 2024, the higher the prices and vice versa.

Some European gas power plant owners are raking it in...

Often you see gas power plants squeezing the markets pushing electricity prices sky-high.

AND on top of those wholesale revenues, they CAPACITY MARKET revenues.

€45 billion for gas power plants and €6 billion for coal since 2015πŸ™‚

Decarbonising for competitiveness: four ways to reduce European energy prices Energy prices areΒ higher in the European Union than in most other industrialised economies, presenting a fundamental competitiveness challenge

My primer for @bruegel.bsky.social on why European energy costs are so high and what policymakers can do about it ‡️

Short version: we are dependent on expensive fossil fuel imports. The answer? Decarbonising efficiently and maximising Europe's renewable resources.
