Busy Rabbit… I was originally thinking of having the title of this post be "Rabbit Rabbit," because it's the first post of the month. Then I was thinking of having it be "Busy, Busy," because I AM. So I compromised and now it's Busy Rabbit. Which honestly sounds like a cereal commercial -- "Busy rabbit! Naps are for kids!" Naps, by the way, are wasted on the young. March is going to be one of those "Why did I schedule two things back to back?" months. I have the first of the…

Happy Book DayΒ Eve! Happy Book Day Eve to those who celebrate. I certainly do! Tomorrow is release day for The Coral Throne, which brings to a close a story that is old enough to drive in the state of Florida. I've told this story before -- in 2009, I woke up with this character in my head. His name was Tarjiaan, and he would not shut up. In the 45 minute drive to Ikea, I had most of the worldbuilding, and I actually ditched my family for about half an hour once we got there to go sit in the restaurant with a cup of coffee and write everything down.

That Wore OffΒ Quickly. Today is that one day of the year when I can't see for most of a day. Yes, it's time for my annual retinal exam, when I get dilated enough to see through the veil and wave to the Fae. Fun times. Usually, I take a nap after and sleep it off. Today, though? I could see much sooner than I expected. So that wore off quickly. This is a good thing -- it let me get back to work sooner than I would normally. I had a lot to do today.

The book club scam has taken an exciting new leap forward. I got one today from a "curated literary platform and newsletter" that, unusually, offered a link to its website. I'm in edits, so obviously I took the opportunity to procrastinate. /1

I now have a voicemail from them saved on my phone that says that they intend to put my book forward with someone else as the author and I will never be able to prove that I actually wrote it. It's like they don't even know that copyright registration or publication dates are a thing.

Beating My Head AgainstΒ Code This weekend, there was time spent beating my head against code. This is otherwise known as updating my website. There was a Wordpress plugin that I used on my book pages that had a major security flaw. The creators of that plugin appear to have abandoned it, so I needed to update my plugins and pull all my books over to the new database, then get the database to display the published works and the series pages. Beating my head against code. I will admit that once I got the hang of it, things went very smoothly.

It Snowed. Let me repeat that. IT SNOWED. Why is this so groundbreakingly weird? Because I live just north of Orlando. This is where people go to vacation AWAY from snow. It is not supposed to snow here! And yet, we had two nights of below freezing weather (in the 20s, with windchills between 8 and 11 degrees). We set our outdoor taps to drip into buckets overnight so they wouldn't freeze, and woke up to frozen solid buckets. It's COLD. And next week, it will be near 90. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm getting tired of weird.

Writing romance is a political act. It's an act of defiance. And sometimes, it's an act of solidarity.

So... repeating for emphasis. If Epistle Media contacts you, ignore them. Hang up on them. BLOCK THEM. 7/7

Today I was told that since someone had submitted my book to them, they could just have someone else rewrite it, and I would have no proof that I wrote it and would look like a plagiarist. Unless I work with them...

Because sure, let's ignore things like publication dates and copyright. 6/7

Cue a VERY LONG PAUSE, followed by a "how very dare...!"

I told them not to call me again.

They've called five times since, send six emails trying to convince me that I was missing the best thing since sex on sliced bread, and today called my cell. Today's message took the absolute cake! 5/7

A New Scam to Watch For: "Pre-Paid" Agent Commissions - Writer Beware As I’ve discussed to my readers’ exhaustion, as well as my own, impersonation scams are rife these days. Scammers are impersonating real, reputable literary agents, publishers, editors, film productio...

Now, they called on my landline, so I have my cell phone in my other hand, googling this racket. And I find Writer Beware's article on publishing scams, where they list Epistle Media as being the rebrand of Hillbrand Agency. So I ask about Hillbrand. 4/7

So I'm already WAY wary. Then she trots out "We're going to pay you $350,000 to $450,000 for this book!"

I called bullshit. My exact words to her were "This is already published, so first publication rights are gone. NO ONE is paying that kind of money if you don't have first publication." 3/7
