My last hourlies from Saturday. A couch rotting day

Nine images of an ant head, from digital design to realization in bronze, from top left in three sequential rows. First row: 1) a digital render of an ant head during design in Blender, gray on a white background; 2) 3D printed gray resin model of the ant head held in my fingers; 3) deep purple 3D printed castable resin model in my hand. Second row: 4) plaster-encased ant head, fresh out of the casting flask; 5) head still on the tree with most plaster removed showing breakout and flashing; 6) most flashing removed, surface cleanup started. Third row: 7) early file work finished, but surface still covered with firescale; 8) most surface cleanup finished, still rough; 9) near-final ant head with antennae inserted, polished eyes gleaming, in my hand.

A dividing budding yeast cell in steel, bronze, and silver, with apatite gemstones for the chromosomes. The sculpture rests in my hand, a physical cutaway view with many cellular structures visible.

A favorite commission this year, a dividing cell with an extra detail. Colleagues of a retiring researcher commissioned me to add the specific structure she worked on—the spindle pole body—to the sculpture. Here it is close up, in sterling silver embedded in the bronze nuclear membrane. 🔬#SciArt
