I’m watching 10 Things I Hate About You to celebrate fall break and all I have to say is Heath Ledger, be still my heart.

If I wasn't dealing with 2 other new preps, this would have been structured like a lessons and carols service...but I'm an overworked professor so ya get straightforward discussion instead

Today in my Camp and Queer Aesthetics class we read Smart's "The Silencing of Lucia" so of course I had to use this gif as a discussion prompt and no. one. laughed. Crawling into a hole now.

Me: Teaching a Camp and Queer Aesthetics class will be fun! How hard can it be.

There was an item on today’s faculty senate agenda that just said “Rumors” and I was very excited for our Fleetwood Mac listening party. Unfortunately it was just some mediocre gossip that wasn’t even true. Lameeee.

When I moved to Kansas, the first PCP I saw gave me some weird vibes. Come to find out his practice is a hub for anti-vaxers. Saw a new PCP today who insisted on me getting my flu and COVID shots ASAP in case insurance policies change and they are no longer covered...

I was planning on doing an Opera Studies musicology seminar in the spring but feeling more and more drawn to making it Music and Authoritarian Politics…

Our elevator went out in the spring, so students were having to constantly carry large instruments up and down stairs, to say nothing of those with mobility issues.

Meanwhile they are building literal rockets across campus.

tomorrow is L'homme armé day in survey and I'm so looking forward for getting it stuck in my head...it might help me knock out O Mio Babbino Caro, which got stuck in my head during today's lecture.

Oh 100%. I won’t go into specifics, but our admin are making a LOT of budget decisions to make the R1 bump possible that only make humanities/social sci research more difficult. Hiring practices, library cuts, etc. And when we push back we’re called snowflakes for being different and causing a fuss…

Oh and let's not forget about how when myself and some other faculty got grant funding to start a book-writing club--which would bring developmental editors and productivity coaches to campus--the grant got pulled by the NSF because it was DEI (because it was designed to support junior faculty) 🙃

I work at an R2 with major R1 ambitions (it’s our president’s top priority). I’m in my 4th semester and I’ve have 11 new preps. No TAs. No pre-tenure leave available. It is structurally impossible to be a top scholar. I’m so fortunate to have a TT job, but this kind of ask is not cool at all.

Happy First day of school! Year two for me at WSU brings launching a new musicology curriculum and 3 new course preps 🙃 but very excited for my Camp and Queer musical aesthetics class. Bring on the fall term!
