(For those who know me well) My first master's degree was in North Korean Studies, and it started when I began volunteering at a school for North Korean defector students back in 2004 Since then, I have met many brothers and sisters who came from the North through various channels and continued to work in related fields (as a researcher, journalist, etc.), allowing me to hear the stories of my friends who came from the North up-close. Listening to the unimaginably tough experiences of friends who made it to the South made me realize that for me, 'unification' isn't just a grand concept. It's about my friends from the North being able to reunite with their families and visit their hometowns again

Whenever I visited these friends' homes or during holiday events at church, they would always make 'tofu rice' for me. Honestly, the seasoning was so spicy that l, being someone who can't handle spice, couldn't eat much (the younger ones would laugh at me), but seeing them painstakingly prepare such a labor-intensive dish with pride and packing up the milder leftovers for me made me feel like I was receiving an abundance of love. I also remember inviting my younger friends to my home during holidays, sharing Korean pancakes with them, and talking about South Korean holiday traditions. Seeing Chung-il receiving hospitality" in the last episode of "Gianjang" made me burst into tears, as it resonated with one of my dreams since pursuing graduate studies: for people from North and South Korea to treat each other without prejudice, to acknowledge each other's backgrounds and differences and to say, "Wow, you've endured so much, and I'm glad you overcame it well! That's really great!" This was my dream

I saw that long-held dream reflected in the last episode of "Gianjang." Yet, in our society, the reality is that when people hear "North Korean defector," they often want to keep their distance, and the perception is often cold when hearing "North Korean." As a result, many friends don't even talk about their origins. Listening to Chung-il honestly share his hometown and defection process and witnessing the warm friendship extended by Seok-jin, who nonchalantly calls him you" and lends him sunglasses, along with the kindness of Manager Gian who makes tofu rice, I just kept crying

In those moments, I saw the hospitality I had long dreamed of, embodied in the actions of Manager Gian and Seok-jin. I recognized in them the warmth of this new hometown, South Korea, for Chung-il. (Even as I write this, tears keep flowing.) I am so grateful to Seok-jin. Just for being at the center of that hospitality. F feel I owe him a huge debt of love. promise to give him genuine love for a lifetime, so get ready! The impact is lingering, and 1 feel like I won't be able to sleep easily tonight. I need to tell my younger siblings from the North to binge-watch "Gianjang." This is the heartfelt reaction of an ARMY who will forever cherish Seok-jin and the love he spreads.
