The Last Day Folks, I'm sorry it's come to this, but I have no choice. Like most, I can no longer ignore the effects of inflation. I held off as long as I could, knowing that the economic future was—at best—rocky and mercurial. But I have succumbed as well to the rising cost of everything. I have to retire my $3 Patreon tier. …

Five Ways Writing Is More Like Driving Than You Think Driving cars and writing. Totally different things right? Stephen King might be able to compare the process of character based writing to driving in the fog, but there's no way driving could be a ridiculously awesome extended metaphor for writing is there? Well, buckle up. Because yes there is.

Would You Ever Date Someone Monogamous? (F.A.Q.) OR Would Someone Polyamorous Ever Date Someone Who Wasn't Question: If someone non-monogamous wanted to date a monogamous person, would they consider it? One of the refrains I see when fascism rises is that “at least the art will be great.” Like everything else is going to suck for millions, and people are literally going to die, but at least we'll get some good albums and novels…

From taking your meds to threesomes to becoming ungovernable. This is the answer to "What can we do?"

I'm gearing up for "Blogust" but the first posts won't be ready until tomorrow. So in the meantime, here's something that is just getting more and more relevant every day.

Best of June from Facebook A collection of the most shared posts from My Public Facebook Page. I do a lot of writing there at the moment. So I use a compilation (with some revision and editing) to fill a post once or twice a month.

Be warned. Political thought ahead. Not for the tenderoni who can't handle issues in their writing memes.

Libraries vs. “Pay Authors”… Wait. WHAT?? Either these people dropping these comments don’t know how libraries work, or they don’t know what a company like Amazon does to make money off the efforts of writers. Fortunately, punching holes in this kind of shit is just exactly my wheelhouse, as long as folks let me put on my snarkiest cestus before my pugilism of ignorance-bashing begins. Also my sweatshop-calibre-overworked metaphors.

The Nine Habits of Highly Effective Writers These are the brass tacks. The bare bones. The pulsing core of effective writing habits. Not opinions, style guides, prose advice, tricks, individual process, or the exaltation of a past generation’s language and culture, but the things that all effective writers have in common throughout the ages and across the world. These are things that every effective writer swears by. The things they all have in common with such predictable ubiquity as to be almost universal.

The A to Zen of The Writer’s Life A while back, I saw a poster called “A to Zen of Life.” It had “Dalai Lama” written across it in cursive, so I know it was totally legit. (Even though he is also attributed with writing Einstein quotes. Of course, none of them were about writing, so I had to come up with my own list. Avoid negative people and habits, but don't confuse people who make you feel bad about negative habits with negative people, for those who call shenanigans on your shenanigans are more valuable than gold.

1-What’s with this blog you post to every day. That's the whole reason this social media outreach is here at all: to get a few extra eyeballs (and maybe the occasional fan) on that blog…er…this blog. If it weren't for this blog, and the traffic that FB brings here, I would hang up all these puns and memes and go enjoy an extra five or ten hours a week doing almost anything else.

The Eighteen Rules of Writing 1- Great writing involves great risk—the risk of terrible writing. Writing that involves no risk is merely forgettable—utterly. 2- When you fail—and you will totally fucking fail—don’t fail to learn. Then you can't really fail at all. That's the best way to approach writing… and life.

If there could be said to be any "rules" at all, here are 18 of them coving grammar, risk, revision, and more.

Be back in the saddle soon. Got a "Why Polyamory" post that should be ready tomorrow or Friday.

A Hierarchy of 20 Things to Resist Fascism (Part 1 of 3) A hierarchy of 20 political activism actions you can take, each built on the foundation of those before, roughly in the order of their importance. A lot of folks on the left side of the political spectrum have the same concerns lately: what do we do about fascism, the destruction of democratic institutions, the obliteration of our social safety nets, and the undermining of our diplomatic standing on the international stage.

Well this is what I've been doing for the last month. (It was supposed to take a week.) I tried to answer the question I'm hearing everywhere—and so many are asking ME—of "What can we do?"
