I know gas prices are gonna raise my cost of living, but not being car dependent is great and everyone should support policies and efforts to make it a universal option for everyone in a city or town.

These darkest visions of the future WILL NOT come to pass, but ONLY because folks are NOW building and connecting and dreaming of better ways.

Much of what we believe is real is just the fantasies of previous generations. We can rebuild it ALL if we decide we must & then go act on that knowledge.

If we do not prepare sufficiently for disasters & fight the ecological collapse of climate change, then we just die.

The survival of our systems are never guaranteed. Govs fall and species go extinct. Everything changes.

Nothing changed my drive to act more strongly than realizing that there are no guard rails on all this.

Before vaccines & modern medicine, people just died when they got (too) sick. Oil & poison clouds blot out the sun & we seem powerless. -> "Rights" are only rights because we keep choosing that.

Authoritarians will stop at nothing to feel safe. Since they have no concept of public welfare and consider everyone an asset to be used and discarded, they will easily enter into a military conflict without a long-term strategy, regardless of the casualties it causes.

this is true (and very dispiriting)

slightly tangentially, it should boggle everyone’s mind how much cultural life in our society is held together by good people volunteering or giving freely of their own time and skills to support others, and just how necessary and vital and important that work is

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

Lake Oswego has officially re-zoned 13 acres in the Kruse Woods office park from "office campus" to "high density residential."

All 3 buildings at 4000 Kruse Way Place will likely be torn down.

The owners of the office park are considering a redevelopment with townhomes and apartments.

These wars are nominally wars for oil.

Oil that would be used to enable cheap car operation throughout the US. The auto infrastructure that's killing us & the land exists due to cheap oil.

The war in Iran, the invasion of Venezuela, even the genocide in Gaza: all wars for the sake of the car.

The national suicide being committed by the Republican-led United States has no historical precedent. Centuries from now (if humanity survives that long), historians will struggle to explain how such a thing was possible.

And here's an amazing visualization of the proposed Vista Bridge, also from 1922. Long before Photoshop or computer renderings, someone in the city's public works department has painted this into a photograph. Sure, the perspective is a bit wonky, but this is still beautiful work!

Before and after in #Paris, surface gas station in front of a residential building, converted into green space.

Before and after in #Paris, surface gas station in front of a residential building, converted into green space.

Imagine if your city did urban transformations like this. The 18th arrondissement of Paris, before and after, 2020 to 2024. Think about how that neighbourhood would feel after this change. How YOUR neighbourhood would feel.

It can happen. Just takes vision & leadership.

Gas prices going up as public transit is defunded is a particularly grim combo.
