Why women's rights matter
JIAGREE with Camden's
LGBT+ Champion, Cir Rishi Madlani (Why trans rights are human rights, letters, November 6) that trans people are not a debate, but no one is framing their existence as a debate.
The debate is around the sex-based rights of women and LGB (same sex attracted) people and about child safeguarding.
The issues are about
metaphysical beliefs versus biological reality, and they affect everyone.
Gender reassignment is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010, and it guarantees the rights of trans people.
The Supreme Court judgment makes no difference to that and to
claim otherwise is to assert a belief that trans rights are in opposition to women's rights.
Violence against trans people is mercifully very rare in the United Kingdom with figures supplied by Channel 4
Fact Check showing that trans people are less likely to be murdered than the average person.
Meanwhile, the annual femicide census shows that women continue to be
murdered at the rate of more than two per week.
It is women whose rights have been systematically undermined at the behest of trans extremist lobby groups who have sought to redefine and misrepresent the law while branding anyone who disagrees as a bigot or a transphobe.
That is why Scottish
women had to appeal to the Supreme Court, and it is a
disgrace that some employers are continuing to hide behind the lack of Equality and Human Rights Commission guidance before
implementing the law, thus forcing women to crowdfund for expensive legal action to get their rights.
The government is apparently calling for an impact assessment on employers before publishing the guidance on a law that was passed by a previous Labour gโ€ฆ
