He should chase him down. He should follow him. He should tell him that he wants him in his life, be it as a friend or a lover, and that they could work things out.
He opens the door and spots Izzy heading up the grass and towards the road. But the words get stuck in his throat. His feet are frozen on the ground. He can’t seem to move, let alone call out to him. Soon, Izzy disappears from view – and Stede is truly alone.
Buttons bumps up against his leg again, mewing softly.
“Not now, Buttons,” Stede sighs. “Can’t you see I’m grieving?”
She mews again.
“What? Are you saying I should run after him?”
Another mew.
“Buttons…he’d only get angry with me. He doesn’t…want me.”
Another, soft mew.
Stede stares out at the grassy hill, clenching a fist at his side. Longing fills his heart, along with a sudden, fierce determination. Buttons, in all her wise ways, is right; he shouldn’t just let things happen. And he doesn’t want to be alone anymore. He can’t just sit back and watch Izzy charge towards certain death all on his own.
“Well, I’ve got to do something with you,” he points out, his heart suddenly hammering in his chest. “Between you and me…I may not survive this journey. And you’ve got to have some place to go.”
