Throughout the past hour, I think my 8 year old has asked me about 50 questions. π I hope she keeps that curiosity throughout school! #elemmathchat

28.03.2025 02:05 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes it will take more than one class to help build up ambition and motivation. It may not feel like you are breaking through, but some of those quiet ones really are listening and pondering about their options. #elemmathchat

This is a good idea. Confirm first and then ask, just to help build that trust up. I wonder if instead of asking a question, first just praise or notice the process and not the answer. Something like, I noticed you drew 5 circles to show 5 (with a big smile on your face). #elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:59 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Very thought provoking question...is there an opportunity to get them OUT into the community? Or virtual field trips and interviews? Our school has a person that helps teachers connect with community businesses, but if you don't have that you could ask the chamber of commerce. #Elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A6: Even though as educators we usually do know most of the answers.... don't let the kids rely on you for those answers. You are there to clarify and connect the understanding, not to just feed them information to repeat.
#ElemMathChat
I wonder how much is their lack of awareness of the options out there? It is hard to be passionate about a future career that you don't even know is an option yet? How can we help expose them to more experiences so they might be exposed to something? #elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:53 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I've only taught pre-service teachers at the community college level - but they actually have always been very eager to engage in conversation and were quicker to open up then some of the HS kids. Although at collegiate level they have chosen to be there, not forced :P #Elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I've taught elementary, middle, and high school &it definitely took LONGER for some of the HS kids to trust and participate a bit more. Some never completely did, but they atleast were hearing more converations and discussion within the classroom. #Elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There is so much more information to talk about, yet so little time left tonight. I could ask you questions all night long! Here is Q6:

In the 8 Mathematical Teaching Practices from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics you will find #5: Pose Purposeful Questions
#ElemMathChat
I found this out on accident. After a few weeks of focusing on MY questioning, I noticed the STUDENTS were asking great questions of themselves, others, and me. #elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A5 - The confidence boost that I saw in many of my students was the best feeling ever! Second biggest impact I saw was the mathematical discourse in my room.... the kids were TALKING about math, even when I didn't ask questions. β€οΈ
#ElemMathChat
"We are giving them ownership of their learning" - I LOVE THAT!!π #Elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Exactly! They have to know that we value their ideas and thoughts and will not judge them or make them feel dumb if their answer is not exactly correct. The process is our focus. #elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We do what we do as teachers for the kids... it's all about the kids. So, how does working on my questioning skills help them? Q5:
#ElemMathChat
They think they are wrong! When I co-teach in a classroom it is always very obvious when kids are not used to being asked questions after they share ideas or answers for this exact reason. #Elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A4 - It's all about the climate and culture. I know... BUZZ .... buzz words. I am just speaking from experience though. Once I made my students feel safe in my room, they OPENED up. They knew I valued their voice and they knew it was the process, not the answer that we celebrated.
#ElemMathChat
Yes, Yes, and YES!!! #Elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The possible errors and misconceptions is so critical to really be prepared to ask good questions. When I work with teachers that are in a new grade level to them, I often spend time before new units helping them think through this. #Elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Q4 - I hear often " I ask questions, but the kids won't answer? They just want to sit there." What must happen before students will ever feel comfortable answering our questions?
#ElemMathChat
Want to get your kids talking more in class? Here are some fantastic resources to consider. Yes, questions come into play within these 5 practices, of course! π
#ElemMathChat
That's not cheating. Work smarter, not harder is what that is. :) #Elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A3 - A few examples are given in the image. Some of these questions help us plan for the student response and other help us plan for OUR response to the student progress and understanding.
#ElemMathChat
Yes! When you question them, the start to ask themselves those questions and it really builds up that ability to self start when they get stuck. #Elemmathchat
28.03.2025 01:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0And it really takes practice to know when to ask which question. It is an art really. #ElemMathChat
28.03.2025 01:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0When we plan quality tasks for our students to tackle, an important step in the planning phase is to anticipate how students will solve and respond to the selected task.
Q3 - What key questions help us as educators anticipate student responses to a task?
#ElemMathChat
A2 - All day long! Not just during the actual teaching part...
#ElemMathChat
