And this comes from being so clueless, tech companies can impress you with gimmicks while they get easy access to citizen data, destroy privacy and steal customer information from your businesses only to build competition services that crowd them out. It’s a crisis but you have to understand to see.

I think it’s a reflection of how backwards our tech public policy skills and thinking have fallen. There’s no revolving door between private and public sector anymore, so those with the experience never move into public policy setting. That plus old or inexperienced parliamentarians.

She escaped her abuser. But not before he buried her in debt.
This is how coerced debt haunts survivors of domestic abuse.
“I have never done more suicide assessments than when I’ve run credit reports with clients and found coerced debt or identity theft.”
@katieherchenroeder.bsky.social digs into a widespread and rarely talked about form of debt: coerced debt.

It's interesting that Paradise, Severance, and Silo are hit shows about a group of people trapped in a controlled environment by a group of rich people who are lying to them about the basic structure of their reality.
Probably says a lot about where we're at as a people!

Pope Leo XIV Echoes Francis in His First Mass, Aligning Himself With ‘Ordinary People’
At Pope Leo XIV's first Mass as leader on Friday, he pledged to align himself with “ordinary people” and not with the rich and powerful. Many see the first American pope as a continuation of his predecessor, Pope Francis, in his advocacy of the poor, migrants and a more open church.

I think a big part of the pushback against GLP-1 meds, despite the strong science, is because wellness industry folks are losing a lot of clients.
That Slender Wonder programme they sold in Joburg with the HGC injections cost way more than Ozempic.

This administration takes antisemitism seriously. That's why we removed The Diary of Ann Frank from all federal libraries.

Can't be overstated how fucked up it is that Black folk came up with a word to express people being aware of the oppression of other people and it's now targeted by far right governments globally as something evil that must be destroyed

i think the biggest public relations coup AI boosters scored was calling it “AI.” people genuinely think it is an intelligence, and that when they query it, it is providing reasoned answers

Steve Carell has to do so much acting to hide just how hot he is, but as he gets older, his acting is increasingly not good enough to misdirect us.

The Guardian has an 'explainer' about the India-Pakistan conflict that manages to avoid stating that the border between the countries was originally drawn by an Englishman who had never been to India and signed off on in a hurry by Lord Mountbatten because he had to get back to Britain for a party.

A better way to think about tech's hold on modern parenting
Apps and influencers offer to ease burdens. But a closer look at the darker origins of that promise can help caregivers navigate what’s real.
To parent today is to encounter an endless firehose of marketing, data, tech optimization, and pastel branding.
But rather than set fire to the machines, @amandahess.bsky.social's new memoir offers a refreshing approach to processing this digital behavior. The result is a gentle revolution.
