A handbook for standardised measurements of plant reproductive traits: from pollen grain to seedling A lack of standardised sampling protocols prevents functional traits from expressing their full potential to advance plant ecology, biogeography, and evolu

Our handbook on standardised measurements of regenerative plant functional traits is now published:
connectsci.au/bt/article/d...

It provides protocols for 58 traits across pollen, seeds, and seedlings aimed at improving consistency and comparability in regeneration trait research.

Seed germination traits reveal naturalization potential: Global insights from temperate European herbaceous species You have to enable JavaScript in your browser's settings in order to use the eReader.

The take-home message:
👉 How seeds behave in the lab already tells us a lot about a species’ future spread.
Routine germination tests from seed banks could therefore become a simple and low-cost tool to support early warning and risk assessment of plant invasions.

Plant species that become naturalized tend to
✔️ germinate more easily,
✔️ germinate at cooler temperatures, and
✔️ respond strongly to seed-coat damage (scarification).
Which traits matter most also depends on whether species establish in temperate, tropical dry or tropical humid regions.

We combined almost 19,000 standardized seed germination experiments with global data on where plants have successfully established outside their native range, covering more than 1,100 European herbaceous species.

🌱 Can we predict which plant species are likely to establish and spread around the world – before they actually do?
Our new study shows that the answer lies in a very early life stage: seed germination.

For several days, my main tools have been a measuring tape and a screwdriver rather than a computer and keyboard.

Setting up our new office and lab spaces is slow but oddly satisfying and a good reminder that teaching and research depend on very concrete infrastructures.

🌱 New paper in Diversity & Distributions!
We show that European alpine plants remain largely stable despite warming, with abundance shifts varying regionally. Seed traits offer limited power to predict “winners” & “losers,” highlighting the need for long-term monitoring.

🌊 Rising seas threaten Danish coastal plants—increased salinity hampers germination, and limited dispersal prevents migration. Congrats to @TanjaLazic on defending her excellent MSc thesis! 🎉 Rigorous data, complex stats, and sharp insights. Wishing you all the best! 👏

Adaptation and Acclimation of Gametophytic Traits to Heat Stress in a Widely Distributed Wild Plant Along a Steep Climatic Gradient You have to enable JavaScript in your browser's settings in order to use the eReader.

5/5 Why it matters: With limited adaptation in gametophytes, wild plants' reproduction is vulnerable to heat waves, potentially disrupting ecosystems. Full study: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

4/5 Finding 3: Almost no acclimation capacity! Only pollen size under extreme heat showed adaptation (warmer populations made larger pollen). Other traits may depend on biochemical changes or shifted flowering times.
