Excellent teamwork with my talented PhD students @marcopsilva.bsky.social and @alexjpinto.bsky.social

Also happy because this is the first outcome 100% @i3suporto.bsky.social made. Hopefully, the first of many more to come.

Essential redundancies fuel Mycobacterium tuberculosis adaptation to the host Redundancy in biology is, at a glance, counterintuitive because if the function of two gene products completely overlaps then, throughout the course of evolution, one of the genes will likely accumula...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an outlier in many ways. One of them is keeping a high degree of functional redundancy despite its obligate pathogen lifestyle. In this review, we reflect on the biological meaning of M. tuberculosis functional redundancies.

Please consider passing around this very informative interview to everyone you know (especially non-scientists). I believe it does an excellent job explaining why taxpayers benefit from the federal governmentโ€™s support of scientific research.

A) Diagram showing how EtfD transfers electrons from beta oxidation to the menaquinol pool in the membrane, linking beta oxidation to oxidative phosphorylation in mycobacteria.
B) A growth curve showing the Mycobacterium smegmatis lacking EtfD can grow when glucose is provided as the carbon source, but has a slight growth delay. Complementing the โˆ†etfD strain with M. tuberculosis on a plasmid rescues the defect.
C) A growth curve showing that โˆ†etfD M. smegmatis cannot grow on medium where the fatty acid oleic acid is the only carbon source. A plasmid with with M. tuberculosis EtfD rescues the defect.

EtfD links beta oxidation to OxPhos in mycobacteria - recent work suggests that targeting EtfD could shorten #tubeculosis treatment.
But how does EtfD work? And how can you assay its activity?
In his final PhD manuscript @courbongautier.bsky.social provides answers!

The Mycobacterium tuberculosis long-chain fatty acid resistome reveals the universal stress protein TB15.3 as essential for infection The human pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) thrives in lipid-rich microenvironments. Long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) are some of the most abundant lipids encountered by Mtb during infection. Mtb...

Long-chain fatty acids can be carbon sources for pathogens but are also potent antimicrobials. In our latest work, we explored the question of how Mycobacterium tuberculosis avoids getting killed by a preferred carbon source.

Ignorant drug development question. Whatโ€™s missing on target-based drug development to make it truly useful? As opposed to the unbiased compound library screens that seem to be the gold standard. I may or may not be thinking on organizing a symposium to address this question.
