A highlight for me was DVD walking by in the background when I was on a Zoom with his fab wife, Arlene. We didn't interact at all, but I was glowing just from having him "live" on my computer screen. With the fire in Malibu, my greatest concern is to evacuate national treasures DVD & Chris Martin.

Attended a fabulous Legacy Equipment workshop at the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) conference in Milwaukee today, run by the amazing Jackie Jay of Farallon Archival Consulting. I got my start with U-matic and other magnetic tape decks over 30 years ago. Great fun to clean and dismantle decks (3/4" U-matic, BetaSP, VHS, all junk decks!) as well as hear tricks from experts. My favorite story: how an archive tech replaced a burned-out video deck motor with one from a miniature/hobby train. Tough to get it to fit in the space, but it worked. Kudos to all of the archivists out there preserving our history, one magnetic tape at a time. ***P.S. to anyone out there who may have old equipment hiding out somewhere (no matter where it is physically located), I can definitely connect you to an archive that would treasure that obsolete deck, even if it doesn't "work" (parts, parts, parts, and more parts!). Let me know if you have U-matic, Betamax, Betacam, or Hi-8 (or other "vintage" digital tape cassette) decks. Please, and thank you!

Text reads: My grandmother gave birth to my mom when she was in her 30's. Unusual for the time period. My mom gave birth to me in her 30's. Also unusual for that time. I gave birth to my 2 kids in my 30's (not so unusual for my time). And voila, here I am, a mom with 2 kids in their early 20's and all four of my grandparents were born in the 1800's. I love every bit of this. A rescue of rare books from the elements, a rescuer who feels a sense of responsibility for his serendipitous find, thorough detective work by a curator of rare books, a last-minute discovery of a new clue, a reunion, a gift, and most of all, a dog named Sparky. 📚🐕🔎💙

My line comes down through William's son William (+Mercy Williams), too. Through their son Lt. Thomas Nickerson (married Mary Bangs), brother of Experience? My line was in Massachusetts, then New York, then they ended up in Ohio. My grandparents lived in South Dakota.

I hope to get myself over to the reunion some year, maybe even if 2025. And yes, lots of Nickersons in Nova Scotia, too. Mine grandfather was born in Ohio, ended up in South Dakota, where my Dad was born. But he ended up in Long Beach, California. Where I grew up.

This has been heartbreaking news for the archival community. I am lucky enough to be able to walk to the AMPAS Museum, but the building is only as valuable as the people who work in it. This feels "DOGE"-like in its "efficiency" and that's not a good thing. Please support the pushback if you can.

Is this the Nickerson line that began in the US with the arrival in Massachusetts with William and Anne (Busby) Nickerson in 1637? A lot of Nickersons ended up in Maine for some reason. I am a direct line to William and Anne. We're perhaps related?
