Painted by art director Kosuke Hayashi, the scene captures a striking tension between sorrow and hope. His talent for portraying light as a fleeting substance gives the work its painterly intensity. That's why we released this as a limited Solegraph edition.

This background from In This Corner of the World shows Hiroshima after the atomic bomb. In the foreground stands the building that today serves as a memorial. Despite the destruction, the city is bathed in radiant light.

I'm a sucker for long background paintings drawn in different perspectives that turn simple animation camera pans into an in-camera optical trick.

Katsufumi Hariu explained his work as the art director for Macross Plus. The background art for the series and feature film are of outstanding quality and conceptual depth. Digging into the artist's archive made me think it would be great to present these works to a larger audience.

Sounds familiar to me. Much looking forward to your take on being animal like. 😀

Des, thank you very much for your support! It really means a lot to me to receive such comments from a respected artist. My greatest satisfaction is to feed back the findings of my work to the creative scene.

In the files we found beautiful cel setups for Tomcat's Big Adventure, imageboards for the Appleseed OVA and Kuroda's work for the video game of Blood - The Last Vampire. I'm much looking forward to publish some of today's findings in the monograph on Ogura and his workshop I'm currently working on.

Hiromasa Ogura was very busy with a current production. Nevertheless he was generous enough to let me browse his archive.

Unfortunately I don't. And it's not the studio but a generic meeting room somewhere in Kichijoji.
