Related to my steam ship madness, look at this print of one of the earliest torpedo boats. Victorian mad max on the high sea!

That's kind of what I'm thinking with a spar torpedo version. Not as refined, but in effect it turns the whole boat into a torpedo!

Some real "what if" shenanigans flowing from this. I was pondering something fast for torpedo boats. Common late victorian era torpedo boats were so called "Thornycroft-type" You know what Thornycroft was also experimenting with in 1900? Hydrofoils. Imagine this with a spar torpedo.

Its like some combinatorics and probability maths, sometimes its easier to calculate the chance of something happening by going for the opposite and figuring out the chance of it not happening.

That's an interesting question! The Thunderchild is often cited as being based on the HMS Polyphemus, though that didn't have main guns at all, instead it had a torpedo tube INSIDE its ram! An that class was supposedly inspired by the Bélier in some way.
