Scaling back DEI programmes and the loss of scientific talent
Nature Cell Biology - Programmes that support diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in science are under attack in the USA. Data indicate that diversity in the scientific workforce increases...
@joann-trejo.bsky.social, @marymunson4.bsky.social and I have a commentary in @natcellbio.nature.com on recent attacks on DEI in biomedical research: "If scientific research, especially biomedical research, is meant to serve everyone, then it requires that everyone has an opportunity to participate"

Despite the mess, we are grateful to be funded, have exciting science happening, and have an opening for a postdoc!
If you are interested in sensory biology and esp in cilia, thermosensation, or interoception, and would like to join an interactive & supportive group - please email.

Working model of the hypoxia-mediated longevity pathway.
Mild stresses on the body, like fasting or cold exposure, can delay ageing. But how?
A new Insight Article explores how oxygen-sensing neurons in C. elegans trigger body-wide stress signals that boost resilience and extend lifespan.

Startups Are Racing to Make Water Out of Thin Air
Materials that are bigger on the inside than the outside provide a futuristic solution to supply water to an increasingly arid planet.
One of today's winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry is UC Berkeley professor Omar Yaghi. Last year I wrote about Yaghi and Atoco, the startup he founded to commercialize his scientific breakthrough with a device that extracts water from air using just sunlight.

I thought science hinged on prestige. Moving abroad made me reassess my priorities
In Denmark, this Ph.D. student fell in love with an egalitarian society that values work-life balance
I still sometimes wonder how my life might have unfolded had I returned to the U.S. I might have gained more recognizable credentials. But I would have missed the chance to build a life here, to invest in a relationship with someone I love...
