I’m only slightly joking. It’s somewhat startling how little you need to get story and narrative across: just a few well chosen shots. Visual storytelling has degraded so much in modern filmmaking that something like DRIVE really feels revelatory.

Saw DRIVE last night at the Academy Musuem. Refreshing reminder that all you really need to make a movie work are close-ups of beautiful actors staring at each other longingly and a kickass soundtrack.

My second episode as assistant director table reads today! Now I am a grizzled veteran, cigarette hanging from my lip, empty scotch bottles littering my office. It’s everything I hoped the job would be.

I didn’t get my first LA animation gig till I was 31 which sucks in some ways but it does mean I get to tell my coworkers funny stories about editing commercials for bikini barista coffee stands and doing graphic design for marijuana packaging out of my boss’s condo.

Listened to some veteran coworkers talk about all the horrible tendinitis and neck/back problems they developed before switching to storyboarding digitally and all the idyllic notions I had about boarding on paper are gone.

Took my parents to see FRIENDSHIP today. My mom and I cracked up the whole way through, my dad was utterly mystified. This is potentially the beginning of an I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE sketch.
