Itโs the very opposite of what libraries should be doing for our communities, i.e. negotiating *lower* prices in order to leverage your tax dollars and provide information, literature and entertainment for all. Which we do with physical media.

Libby and other services are what I am talking about. Building our own platform is beyond the capabilities of most libraries but has been done at the system level. Audiobooks are sometimes worse. Pay per use is Hooplaโs model and that is extremely difficult to budget, in a different way.

It costs more than a private consumer would pay. Sometimes as much as 7 or 8 times as much. Only one user at a time can check out the book. And we have to buy it again, typically after 26 checkouts.
