There is a perspective that fusional morphology is not “on-line” but mostly stored and there is a perspective that it is constructed online via morphophonological processes. When I elicit forms in Mixtecan languages with fusional tonal morpholology, speakers regularly pause and take longer… 1/n

I never know how these things go. If you are polite while being non-white, non-straight, non-male, etc, people consider you weak. If you are impolite, people consider you a threat. I don’t see how there is any winning by appealing to decorum.

Linguists often discuss “terms of address” separately from “pronouns” but it’s really an arbitrary distinction in most languages. Though, if we think of terms of address as just pronouns, then we need cultural concepts rather than just coindexation with person/number. #linguistics

I’m looking for examples demonstrating the differences between non-ritual and ritual speech in languages where they are heavily codified. The problem is that most things are written by anthropologists who would rather talk about what ritual speech is “doing” than actually show a damn example.

Finished drafting another chapter - this one on information structure (mostly on topicalization because focus is boring). That brings my grammar to 321 pages (full page, single-spaced) so far. I have 4.5 chapters left to write and several that I'll probably revise. #linguistics
