This is perhaps a good time to remind non-USians here that (a) most Americans do not support any of the conflicts the executive branch has *unilaterally* started, (b) most Americans support Ukraine, and (c) most Americans support immigrants in our country.

that they can’t handle non-concatenative morphology and want to pretend it doesn’t ever exist (either formally or in models)? This is just me meandering, but I’m curious about it.

…access is just not a good metric for whether something is constructed or not. I’m not a psycholinguist, but I find the question interesting especially since the languages I work on mostly have fusional tonal morphology (and a lot of it). Or is it just that linguists hate to admit… 3/n
27.02.2026 16:55 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0… to reply with the form that I’m asking. Would we expect this with forms that are mostly stored? After all ‘crecí’ should be just as accessible as ‘crecer’, especially in a language that lacks an infinitive (crecer elicits the potential verb form for 3rd person). Or is it that speed of lexical… 2/n
27.02.2026 16:53 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0There is a perspective that fusional morphology is not “on-line” but mostly stored and there is a perspective that it is constructed online via morphophonological processes. When I elicit forms in Mixtecan languages with fusional tonal morpholology, speakers regularly pause and take longer… 1/n

I think the only appropriate response is for all of us to have a gender reveal party for the desk and the frying pan. "Omg, my spatula is a boy!"

24.02.2026 23:01 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I never know how these things go. If you are polite while being non-white, non-straight, non-male, etc, people consider you weak. If you are impolite, people consider you a threat. I don’t see how there is any winning by appealing to decorum.
24.02.2026 22:58 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Yes, of course. My comment is not about what distinctions exist in human language. It’s about how linguists continue to make a kind of arbitrary division between address terms and pronouns.

Amen.
And this obsession with whether inanimate objects are socially gendered is weird.
That's a much better typological take.
24.02.2026 18:18 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Linguists often discuss “terms of address” separately from “pronouns” but it’s really an arbitrary distinction in most languages. Though, if we think of terms of address as just pronouns, then we need cultural concepts rather than just coindexation with person/number. #linguistics
24.02.2026 16:49 — 👍 8 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0I’m looking for examples demonstrating the differences between non-ritual and ritual speech in languages where they are heavily codified. The problem is that most things are written by anthropologists who would rather talk about what ritual speech is “doing” than actually show a damn example.
