It's coz I'm also from a former British colony. She's from the Barbados. We all start with British English, then develop local variations.

I recently learned about functional literacy—where people only technically know how to read and write, but are unable to comprehend or communicate complex ideas through written language. It's like a muscle you not only have to be trained to use, but also have to keep using to stay sharp.

I find myself breaking things down in elementary English in professional settings way too often. It's embarrassing for y'all.

For how much I had to work on grammar, speaking, listening, reading, writing, formality, colloquialisms and field-specitic jargon as a foreigner, English-speakers are TERRIBLE at communication in general.

The way I cannot remember Burmese names that go ABC or XXY, along with faces ... Like I'd met U Khin Maung Tun and Daw San San Myint on more than one occasio, and I can't recall anything beyond the fact that they're yet another married couple I'd been introduced to before.

I like attending Burmese community events, coz I get to witness kids having a good childhood—or at least a better one than what my generation had growing up.
