Lapfox REALLY dragged me deep into the fandom too, hell yeah.

I could totally see a separate monetary system being set up for food though. Like handing in a token when picking up produce to get an appropriate amount, a ration card system. (Which were also notoriously abused, oops.)

Oh definitely, I'd say the difference being that the real world 'abuse' of these systems (when it rarely happens) would be nowhere as big as some elephant looking to make a quick buck by selling 1/100th of an ice cream scoop for $15 a pop. It would practically become a whole industry.

capitalist approach makes it bad lmao.

If I were to justify it though I'd say:
You can rent a mouse office and offer free lunches for the same price as you could feed one elephant worker, so mouse-work ends up being run by skeevy companies looking for the highest profit margin. That's life!
