Characterization of DNA damage by the human gut bacterial genotoxin colibactin reveals a preference for alkylation at AT-rich DNA sequences and the importance of an unstable central Ξ±-ketoimine in mediating this specificity. These results help to explain the locations of cancer-linked mutations derived from colibactin exposure.
