I play with the Mid America Freedom Band, an LGBTQ concert band here in KC. Friday was our season finale and we premiered this timpani concerto which we commissioned to celebrate our new timpani.

This is a little scary to share, but also really important. I’ve decided to chase a dream: becoming a pro clarinetist. I’m over 40, self-taught, and didn’t go to music school—but playing has changed me. It gives me purpose. I’m choosing to believe I can build a life around it.

When I picked up the clarinet I didn’t realize it would eventually mean having to learn an entire family of instruments 🤪
One of the formative experiences of my childhood was playing French Horn in the pit orchestra of my high school’s production of “The King and I”. 📯
It was amazing. 🥰
Now that I’m playing clarinet I’ve been kinda keeping my eye out for any opportunity to play in a pit again. 👀
Been having some motivational issues lately
Someone said to me today “You can do this. And you’re allowed to want it.”
It’s really sticking with me so I made a meme out of it
I practice my clarinet like a lot.
But I live in apartment building. My neighbors are super cool (the one I share a wall with is a jazz drummer, so I don’t think it would be possible to annoy him).
But I worry nonetheless. So I bought a ClariMate to try out.
