I keep thinking about how when my daughter was tiny, she used to cry louder than any other baby to let me know she was displeased with the situation. She used to make rooms echo.

Anyway, I tend to chat with my students outside the lift. The other day this appeared:

any email from systems-do-not-reply(at)arc.gov.au has the exact same energy as 'You have a new message in your MyGov inbox' at this time of year

I don't often give advice to these sort of emails as I get so many other than a 'sorry not available' reply, but this one warranted some gentle advice

In this thread I will summarize key ways to make your CV appealing to academics that you're applying to do a research project with:

1. don't list employment at services that complete assignments for students who are willing to pay as your main tutoring experience

1/1 that's the whole thread

Me: wow I’m so excited to go to my first LVK collaboration meeting! It’s even going to be in Australia!
Toddler with gastro: the hell you are going to that

ARC has β€œpaused” future rounds of grant schemes pending outcomes of its NCGP Policy Review.

All schemes previously scheduled to open before 1 July this year will go ahead.

But next year’s Laureates, Industry Fellowships & Discovery Indigenous won’t.

I love the little daycare app where it tells you what they ate. I like to imagine what it would be like if our workplaces reported the same:
7:30am: coffee (extra large serving)
10:00am: morning tea - biscuits (extra large serving)
12:00 - lunch - declined
12:30 - coffee (extra large serving)

Seems the CoE analog is focused on national priority areas... big question for me as to whether that will include pure research :/

The embedded fellowships are giving me the willies - only 2yrs is crazy short, and just adds to the transient-ness of the research workforce. I'm also a bit concerned about the apparent lack of pure research CoE equivalents? Unless I'm misreading something

The ARC Board has proposed a major shake-up of the National Competitive Grants Program ▢️ www.arc.gov.au/engage-us/co...

I've only skimmed so far, but they propose reducing 13 grant schemes to 6, with intent & scope in the tableπŸ‘‡

Submissions are being accepted in response until 13 April. Get to it!

No, I'm not frowning at you on Zoom because you said something wrong, it's because I somehow managed to produce a plot using KDEs that has used up a terabyte of memory on my computer and it's shouting at me to stop

Every time I go back to dip a toe into my PhD field it's like a holiday for my brain. Science is weird when you don't have to actively think

The multi-modality in this particular parameter is going to finish me off. I just want to plot something nicely.

When the child climbs on something and is about to jump off and he is closer than me I often alert @drgozz.bsky.social by saying β€˜David’. Child now climbs onto things and announces dangerous intent by shouting β€˜Dave!’ Before attempting to jump

2025 off to a great start, I just read an Instagram comment where somebody referred to Irukandji jellyfish (the little ones that kill you) as β€˜the forbidden contact lens’

Does anyone actually enjoy the share plate thing at conference dinners? Am I the odd one out because I hate it?

Thought I was ending the year having acheived less than nothing but turns out I have actually made progress and I just increased my prior volume too much and I am actually 90% of the way towards a paper despite only working 3 days a week since March. Go me.

My current fellowship has enabled me to continue doing research while also having time to be a present parent for my baby. There are days it is hard and lonely to basically be your own manager, boss and mentor but it’s also a path I’m proud I’ve taken

13.12.2024 02:53 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It might have been hard, but at least I can look at everything I’ve done and know that none of it was handed to me or prepared for me. My papers are few but they’re almost entirely my own ideas. I am part of some really cool collaborations now.
