On the right, a book titled "Performance and Protest: Inuit of Labrador and the Worldβs Columbian Exposition, 1893"by Nigel Markham, featuring a ferris wheel in the background and an studio portrait of a large group of Inuit men, women and children in the foreground. On the left, text reads "In the summer of 1892, an American company charted a schooner to coastal Labrador to recruit Inuit for an ethnological exhibit to be presented the following year at the Worldβs Columbian Exposition. Promised wages, room and board, and hunting provisions upon their return, sixty Inuit boarded the Evelena in the fall, bound for Chicago"
Performance and Protest explores Inuit resilience at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Forced to play a role popularized by early Arctic explorers, Inuit from Labrador took their employers to court, challenging stereotypes in a landmark case.
