A photo of modern Oblaten, in this case from Bad Ischl in Austria. The image shows a round tin labelled "Ischler-Oblaten". The lid is open, and several round wafers are arranged in front of it. These Oblate/oplatky became industrial products in the 19th century when bakers in different spa towns developed distinct varieties. They remain popular in Austria, Southeast Germany, and the Czech Republic and are often bought by tourists. The tradition likely goes back several centuries before.

I came across a recipe that looks like an ancestor of #oplatky in Staindl's 1547 cookbook: wafers with a rosewater-scented spice filling. Be careful if you try the paper trick.
