Stearns said that everything is under consideration when making those decisions. Every player has a negative aspect to them, nobody is perfect. Pete's bat, ability to play and deliver in NY, standing in the community, love of the fans, provide a net positive despite his subpar defense.

It feels different because he crushed it this year. Pay the man, lock it up during exclusive negotiation window, no game of chicken this time.

And our RISP was meh. But agreed it all starts with the pitching.

He can't pitch on "normal" rest, gets hurt constantly, and the minute his mechanics are off, he goes from ace to dud. Mets aren't rebuilding, they're rebuilt. The 2025 band aids didn't work. 2026 starts the marriage of the current core with the new core.

He's too high maintenance, the upside isn't worth the effort here, when one bad step can ruin all. Stearns didn't sign him and made his feelings about him point blank during his presser. If they get anything from or for him, great, but they will not build a rotation around him and his needs anymore.

Most of these guys were holdovers from before Stearns and Mendoza were hired. I think Mendy deserves at least one more shot with coaches he had a hand in selecting.

Jaxson Dart has been a nice antidote for my Mets depression

And i don't think Pittsburgh trades him yet. He's too cost effective and packs that stadium. Once he starts hitting arbitration and getting paid more towards his fair value, then they'll move him.

And that still might not be enough

It would take one of our big three pitching prospects, Vientos, one of our next level pitching prospects (Wenninger or Santucci) and 1-2 more hitting prospects (Clifford, Reimer, Morabito), and maybe throw in Peterson for some immediate pitching return.

He signed for 5 years, i can't see him getting fired before the end of it and his foundation is completely in place.

Thats six years of stearns built up, we only have two.
