San José Is Cracking Down on Smoke Shops and Sales of Nitrous Oxide ‘Whip-Its’ | KQED
The City Council passed twin ordinances to put a moratorium on new tobacco retail licenses and ban the sale of nitrous oxide at smoke shops.
When we think about a safer and more vibrant downtown, we're not thinking about smoke shops making unpermitted cannabis sales and stocking industrial sized canisters of nitrous oxide. This is an important first step towards a safer and healthier San José.

This week, the San José City Council took the first step towards a policy I’ve been fighting for since I was a planning commissioner.

It was all treats and no tricks as I joined a queen, a witch, and Ted Lasso — I mean, City Manager Jennifer Maguire, City Librarian Jill Bourne, and Assistant City Manager Lee Wilcox — in handing out candy and books to trick or treaters at the MLK Library. 📚 👻 🎃 (1/2)

Ribbon cuttings are one of the best parts of my job, because we get to celebrate folks investing in our city and show everyone that Downtown San José is the place to be. That’s why I was excited to join in welcoming Poppy & Claro to our downtown!

This is exactly why we need local infrastructure to support EVs! Cities like San Jose, CA, and Erie, CO require EV charging stations with certain types of new development. This is how we start to decarbonize our transport! Shoutout to LCPN member @tordillosd3.bsky.socialn🔌 #cities #climatepolicy

I’m especially proud that our first office-led memo was related to affordable housing. Gateway Tower, a 100% affordable development in the heart of the SoFA District, will have 10 units set aside for the artists that make our arts district one of the cultural and economic engines of our city. (2/2)

Let me be clear: no one in San José should live in fear. As the Trump Administration finds new ways to circumvent the law, we must be ready to fight back.
