San José Is Cracking Down on Smoke Shops and Sales of Nitrous Oxide ‘Whip-Its’ | KQED The City Council passed twin ordinances to put a moratorium on new tobacco retail licenses and ban the sale of nitrous oxide at smoke shops.

When we think about a safer and more vibrant downtown, we're not thinking about smoke shops making unpermitted cannabis sales and stocking industrial sized canisters of nitrous oxide. This is an important first step towards a safer and healthier San José.

Ribbon cuttings are one of the best parts of my job, because we get to celebrate folks investing in our city and show everyone that Downtown San José is the place to be. That’s why I was excited to join in welcoming Poppy & Claro to our downtown!

I had the pleasure of taking part in Smith Carlos Day at San Jose State University. Tommie Smith and John Carlos stand as examples to all of us (Spartans or not!) who have a platform. Whether that platform is an Olympic podium or the dais at City Hall, we must use it to forward the cause of justice.

My office presented our first proclamation this week in celebration of Filipino American Heritage Month! As San José's first Filipino American councilmember, it was my honor to celebrate the contributions of San José's FilAm community and to be a small piece of that history.

As my office works on policy solutions to the issues facing Japantown, I’m committed to making sure local leaders like these are at the table to ensure the best possible outcomes for the neighbors, businesses, and institutions that make this neighborhood special. (2/2)

My team and I spent Saturday w/the Japantown Community Congress, having great conversations about the collaborative work these local leaders do in maintaining one of our cultural treasures. Then we took a neighborhood tour, led by Japantown Business Association Vice President Jim Nagreda. (1/2)

Gateway Tower, a 100% affordable development in the heart of the SoFA District, will have 10 units set aside for the artists that make our arts district one of the cultural and economic engines of our city.
