Awesome! Zurich is just 2.5 hours away and there's a great microbial eco-evo community here!

Any chance you'll drop by Switzerland?

Do plasmids evolve faster 🐇, slower 🐢, or just like chromosomes 🧬?

In our new paper, we tackled this question using theory, simulations, bioinformatics, and experiments!

👇 Check out all the details in Paula’s thread!

While making data summaries - Do not listen to the League of legends and/or Arcane soundtrack. Taking a trip through memory lane for all the experiments, with such a beautiful set of songs will definitely make you cry.

Experimental evolution in winter - Actually a good idea. You don't lose out on any summer fun, you get done with transfers and most importantly, you are motivated to get it done on the daily.
With EE, Linkin Park's new album and Barcelona doing well - it's actually a fun winter so far!

Together with @frimanscience.bsky.social and our Chinese colleagues, we have worked out how to predict

(i) siderophore molecular structures

and

(ii) siderophore interaction networks in communities

from sequence data!

Mutators can drive the evolution of multi-resistance to antibiotics Author summary The global rise in antimicrobial resistance means we urgently need new approaches that halt its spread. Combination therapy, using multiple antibiotics as one treatment, proposes to do ...

📣 Paper: We show that mutators can drive the evolution of multi-resistance to antibiotics, in cases where purely wild type populations can't

This came out earlier this year while the other place was imploding

But it's a story I'm proud of for many reasons...

Annual numbers of students, teachers, and schools participating in and learning with EvolvingSTEM, our classroom curriculum based on a bacterial evolution experiment.

Annual numbers of students, teachers, and schools participating in and learning with EvolvingSTEM, our classroom curriculum based on a bacterial evolution experiment.

Some figures are better than others. For us, this is up there, charting the growth of EvolvingSTEM over the last decade to reach ~5000 students in total. @evolvingstem.bsky.social. I'm so proud of this team and program!

Well, one of my favorite papers (3rd fav!) of my career was just published at @eLife. Here, we do what we do best: generate new understanding of the factors shaping multicellular evolution through a combo of synthetic biology, exptl evolution and theory. elifesciences.org/articles/84336

We're having a bit of a tough quarter over at Skype a Scientist. I'm writing grants nonstop over here but won't know if it's working for a couple months.

The collapse of social media has made our business model of many small donors beak. In the meantime, your support is VERY appreciated.
