It's because the culture around here is *designed* to freeze those trends, those moments, those rhetorical strategies and vulnerabilities, all in amber.

I'm not saying this does or should overwhelm your moral objections to X or to posting there. Those are good arguments. But there's a reason why this place feels moribund, why the same dynamics that roiled Peak Twitter keep forcing power users off the platform.

X is terrible, but it does just 'get to be' X. Musk can't actually control it, no matter how many times he lobotomizes Grok. People are permitted, culturally, to do new weird stuff.

On here, if you're not posting endlessly about politics you're livetweeting sports (or you're a furry artist).

Like, seriously, as a mostly-outside perspective, it's so obvious that the recurrent pathologies and gradual decline of this platform is all downstream from A: its purpose being fundamentally to freeze a particular set of norms in time and B: basic disagreement about what those norms are.

It's also particularly a handicap here because on Other Platforms, you can cancel out some of the left-corniness by saying "that's so dated", but On Here about half the platform wants to recreate 2021 Twitter and the other half wants to recreate 2017 Twitter, so that rhetorical move is not available

This is behind a lot of the pro-Stancil sentiment, even on the right, I think. Running into a genuine nonviolent Civil-Rights-Movement-style leftie is kind of a novelty in 2026, and people are more burnt out on setting fire to trash cans than they're even willing to admit in public.

There's a lot of demand for a resurgent anti-Trump left but there's a real allergy to doing politics the way the broad left did politics from 2014-2024 (call it 'wokeness' as a shorthand if you want), but since institutions move slower than culture this has been hard for political orgs to navigate.

This is what’s so goofy about a lot of the ‘protest strategy’ stuff.

“People light garbage fires to make hot rocks which can then peacefully puncture the tires of ICE vehicles” is such a crazy thing to say if you have any realistic understanding of how chaotic and improvisational most protests are.

It’s incredibly obvious what the admin wants us to do, and if you’re still insisting we ought to give it to them, I have to assume you’re either 14 years old or intellectually equivalent to one

I don’t want strange masked men taking my neighbors.

I don’t want strange masked men lighting fires in my city.

I want the world to see what’s happening in my community.

I want Minneapolis to be left alone and not made into a war zone.

How it’s going

Still tech-pessimistic, but kind of weirdly deeper. It's not that social media has given us these ideas about ourselves and our world that could be displaced. It's that scrolling vertical video just produces such a quick behaviorist response in people that they don't have ideas in the first place.
